Bryan is profoundly Deaf and has a learning disability. He was referred to Beyond Empower to help him feel more confident being active, connecting socially, and spending more time in the community.

To make sure communication was fully accessible, Bryan’s Lifestyle Coach completed the initial assessment using British Sign Language (BSL). Bryan shared clear goals — he wanted to be more active, meet new people, and build confidence in new environments.

Gym sessions were arranged at a local leisure centre. Staff were briefed on how best to communicate with Bryan, including using clear visual demonstrations and maintaining face-to-face contact. These simple adjustments helped Bryan feel welcomed and able to take part at his own pace.

Over time, his confidence grew. Bryan began attending independently, using equipment by himself and approaching staff when needed. He settled into a routine that supported both his health and his social confidence.

“I’ve noticed a real change in Bryan’s confidence since you started working with him — he’s much happier and more outgoing.”
Penny, BSL Interpreter

Bryan has now successfully completed his personalised support with us. He continues attending the gym on his own — building on the progress he made and enjoying the independence he wanted from the start.
